Framing and displaying your art can transform how it’s experienced in your home. Whether you’re a collector, decorator, or artist styling your own space... how to frame and display art at home matters as much as the art itself.

This topic came up in my recent Instagram series, where I shared quick tips on framing, spacing, and using muted tones to make art shine. Here’s a quick, visual-friendly guide to 5 framing do’s and don’ts, plus a few favorite apps to help you bring your vision to life.

🎯 1️⃣ Let the Artwork Breathe — Don’t Overcrowd

Every piece deserves its moment.

✅ Do:

  • Leave 3–5 inches between frames on a gallery wall.

  • Add white mats or floating frames for calm, open spacing.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Hang too many colorful pieces too close.

  • Ignore wall scale, even beautiful art can look cluttered if it’s too tight.

🪞 2️⃣ Choose Frames That Compliment — Don’t Compete

A frame should support the art, not steal the spotlight.

✅ Do:

  • Stick to neutral tones: white, black, or natural wood.

  • Use similar frames within one wall for a unified look.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Pair ornate frames with modern or abstract art.

  • Forget that simple frames help your art breathe.

A beautiful ornate frame, but it competes with the contemporary artwork instead of enhancing it.

The white floater gives the artwork room to breathe, while the gold frame harmonizes with the room’s décor.

💡 3️⃣ Be Mindful of Light — Don’t Hang in Harsh Sunlight

Lighting can make or break how your art feels.

✅ Do:

  • Use soft, indirect light or picture lights.

  • Try UV-protected glass if the wall gets sunlight.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Hang art near fireplaces or bathrooms.

  • Use glossy glass, it creates glare and reflections.

The frame is placed under harsh, low lighting, creating shadows that diminish the visibility of the artwork.

Indirect natural sunlight enhances the visibility of colors and textures, bringing out the depth and vibrancy of the artwork.

📏 4️⃣ Play With Scale & Placement — Don’t Hang Too High

Good placement creates connection.

✅ Do:

  • Center art at 57–60 inches from the floor (eye level).

  • Leave 6–8 inches above furniture.

  • Use ArtRoomApp, WallApp, or Canvy to visualize layouts.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Hang artwork too high, it feels disconnected.

  • Mix too many frame colors or shapes in one area.

The piece sits too high above the couch, and the angle makes it difficult to view comfortably from the front.

🎨 5️⃣ Let Your Art Inspire the Room — Don’t Force the Match

Let your art guide your space instead of dictating it.

✅ Do:

  • Pull one or two colors from the artwork into pillows, throws, or accents.

  • Use neutral wall tones (gray, charcoal, off-white) to let art pop.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Match every color in your décor.

  • Frame every work the same way, contrast adds interest.

The throw and pillows echo the colors and pattern in the artwork, creating a cohesive look against the muted gray couch.
