Reimagining Heritage: How I Use AI and Mixed Media to Tell New Stories

Some AI Generations based on my hours longer conversation and prompts

As an Indian-American mixed media artist and trained computer engineer, technology has always been at the forefront of my creative process. While my art explores cultural identity, migration, mythology, and feminism, I’ve also been drawn to tools that help expand how those stories are told. That’s where AI comes in.

Artificial Intelligence often sparks fears about replacing artists, but I see it differently. For me, AI is a shiny, exciting extension of the digital tools I’ve always loved—something I couldn’t resist experimenting with. I use AI not to create finished works, but to generate concept sketches, visual references, and new compositional ideas. It’s a tool that helps me refine my storytelling and push my creative boundaries.

Through layered portraits using Indian textiles, archival imagery, and printmaking, I explore themes of resilience, displacement, and hybrid identity. When I reimagine mythological figures like Sita or Draupadi through a feminist lens, I blend ancient narratives with modern visual technologies. In doing so, I reclaim stories often misrepresented or overlooked—particularly those from South Asian and postcolonial histories.

AI is one such tool. Often positioned as a threat to artists, I see it differently. For me, AI isn’t a replacement—it’s a collaborator. It allows me to generate concept sketches, test compositions, and even explore symbolic visual language rooted in my South Asian heritage. But more than just imagery, AI has helped me establish stronger, more empowered narratives, especially when reimagining mythological women like Sita and Sati. I believe that when used with intention, AI in contemporary art can give us more ways to voice our perspectives, not fewer. It doesn’t erase the artist—it empowers them.

My work lives at the intersection of heritage and innovation—handcrafted and high-tech. You can explore my latest exhibitions, public art, and studio practice at www.nimishart.com.
